Why Knowledge
and Values are Inseparable
The European Institute for Knowledge & Value Management“
(EIKV) has set itself the task of simultaneously accentuating
knowledge and values. Knowledge creates value and ensures values
while values guarantee a framework and the breeding ground for
knowledge allowing it to develop and multiply without constraints.
Neither knowledge nor values are minimised by sharing. Instead,
they gain strength and assertiveness. Knowledge is a powerful
engine of values and generating, refining and disseminating
knowledge figures prominently in creating wealth in companies
and in the social fabric of consciousness.
But we shouldn't forget that without an adequate set of rules,
the availability or non-availability of knowledge can spark
dangerous shifts in the power structure with dramatic consequences.
EIKV is of the opinion that there is still too little attention
paid to the substantial interdependence and interaction between
knowledge and values. Both levels of this discourse address
disjunctive target groups applying a highly specific range of
methods that virtually exclude the idea of synergies.
Companies of all shapes and sizes have to develop a greater
sensitivity for knowledge and values, the relevance they have
for our lives and how their life-cycles function. The measure
of the transitory nature of knowledge is not only its half-life,
but also employee turnover or when employees turn away from
their job and company for whatever reasons. |
Theory
and Practice
In contradistinction, we can measure
the applicability of company knowledge from what it contributes
to the gross operating result and the intellectual capital of
a company.
Unfortunately, the range of methods we have at our command these
days to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the half-life
of knowledge and intellectual capital leaves a lot to be desired
in terms of practicality and accuracy.
And that's just where EIKV wants to start scrutinising existing
theoretical constructs for how meaningful they really are and
how well suited they are to applications in small businesses.
EIKV's experts are on hand and on the ground for consultation
and counselling to design, implement and evaluate company knowledge
and value management applications.
